Overview

What Is a Markdown Previewer?

Markdown is a plain-text format for writing structured documents. A Markdown Previewer helps writers, developers, students, and documentation teams see how supported Markdown will become HTML while they edit notes, README files, technical documentation, and snippets.

This page renders a small, documented Markdown subset locally and exposes the generated HTML. It is designed for quick source-and-preview work rather than full standards conformance, document publishing, sanitization of arbitrary third-party HTML, or a rich text editor.

Features

Markdown Previewer Features

Markdown input

Enter or paste source in a labelled text area.

Rendered preview

Inspect generated HTML in a scrollable preview panel.

Generated HTML

Read the current HTML source in a separate read-only text area.

Supported blocks

Render ATX headings, paragraphs, flat lists, blockquotes, fenced code, and horizontal rules.

Supported inline syntax

Render inline code, strong text, emphasis, http/https links, and http/https images.

Raw HTML escaping

Escapes raw input HTML before generating the preview.

Source statistics

Shows character, word, line, and blank-line-separated block counts.

Copy and sample controls

Copy Markdown or generated HTML, clear the source, or reload the sample.

Method

How Markdown Preview Works

The previewer normalizes Windows line endings, processes the source line by line, and groups supported block structures. It escapes ampersands, angle brackets, quotation marks, and apostrophes before applying its implemented inline transformations, then produces the HTML shown in the preview and Generated HTML panel.

Raw HTML is not rendered as markup. Paragraph lines without a blank line are joined with spaces, and unclosed fenced code is rendered as a code block through the end of the input. The tool does not implement tables, task lists, nested lists, reference links, front matter, HTML blocks, source maps, or a Markdown validation mode.

Workflow

How to Use the Markdown Previewer

  1. Enter or paste Markdown into the input area.
  2. Review source statistics and the rendered output as it updates.
  3. Inspect the Generated HTML panel when HTML output is needed.
  4. Copy the Markdown source or generated HTML.
  5. Use Clear or Load Sample to begin another example.

Examples

Common Uses

README drafting

Preview headings, lists, links, code snippets, and blockquotes before adding a short README section.

Documentation notes

Check a concise Markdown note while preparing documentation or release notes.

HTML inspection

Copy the generated HTML for a supported Markdown snippet during development.

Writing workflow

Use the source count and preview together to inspect the structure of a small article outline.

Teaching

Demonstrate the relationship between a supported Markdown construct and its generated HTML.

Advantages

Benefits

  • Offers immediate feedback for the implemented Markdown syntax.
  • Shows both a rendered result and the generated HTML text.
  • Keeps source, preview, and copy controls in one browser-based workflow.
  • Escapes raw HTML before preview generation.
  • Uses no external parsing dependency.

Boundaries

Limitations

  • This is not a full CommonMark or GitHub Flavored Markdown renderer.
  • Tables, nested lists, task lists, reference links, raw HTML blocks, and front matter are not implemented.
  • Rendered links and images accept only http and https URL syntax.
  • Paragraph line breaks are joined as spaces unless a blank line starts another paragraph.
  • The generated HTML should be reviewed and tested in the destination environment.

Guidance

Tips for Best Results

  • Use a space after heading number signs for the supported heading pattern.
  • Separate paragraphs with blank lines when you want distinct blocks.
  • Use http or https URLs for links and images in this implementation.
  • Use a closing triple-backtick line to end a fenced code block deliberately.
  • Test copied HTML in the destination project before publishing.

Avoid

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming the preview matches every Markdown application.
  • Expecting raw HTML tags to render instead of appearing as escaped text.
  • Using tables or nested list syntax and expecting structured output.
  • Using relative, mailto, or non-HTTP URLs for links and images.
  • Using the preview as a security or HTML-sanitization guarantee for untrusted content.

Questions

FAQ

What is a Markdown Previewer?

A Markdown Previewer converts supported Markdown source into HTML so you can inspect its rendered structure while editing.

Which Markdown features does this tool support?

It supports ATX headings, paragraphs, unordered and ordered lists, blockquotes, fenced and inline code, links, images, bold text, emphasis, and horizontal rules.

Does this tool support full CommonMark?

No. The previewer uses a custom renderer with a limited supported syntax set and is not a CommonMark or GitHub Flavored Markdown compliance checker.

Does it support tables?

No. Pipe tables are not implemented by this renderer.

Does it support nested lists?

No. The list parser creates flat ordered or unordered lists and does not implement nested list structure.

Can I use raw HTML in the preview?

No. Raw HTML is escaped before the preview is rendered, so HTML tags are shown as text instead of being executed as markup.

How are Markdown links handled?

The renderer supports inline links with http or https URLs and opens rendered links in a new tab with noreferrer.

How are Markdown images handled?

The renderer supports inline images with http or https URLs and places the Markdown alt text in the generated img alt attribute.

Can I copy the Markdown source?

Yes. Copy MD writes the current Markdown source to the clipboard when browser permissions allow it.

Can I copy the generated HTML?

Yes. Copy HTML writes the current generated HTML string to the clipboard when it is available.

Can I download Markdown or HTML?

No. This implementation provides source and HTML copy controls, clear, and a sample loader, but no download feature.

Why does the preview differ from another Markdown app?

Markdown parsers differ in syntax coverage and parsing rules. This page only renders its documented, custom subset.

Does it preserve single line breaks?

Not as visible line breaks in a paragraph. The renderer joins nonblank paragraph lines with spaces; blank lines start a new paragraph.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. It uses standard browser text areas, buttons, and a scrollable preview region.

Is my Markdown uploaded to a server?

The previewer runs in your browser and does not intentionally upload entered Markdown.

Is the Markdown Previewer free?

Yes. This is a free browser-based Markdown preview tool.
